    Spine Care FAQs

    Your Spine Surgery Questions, Answered

Persistent back pain or neck pain, numbness or weakness in the arms or legs, difficulty walking or standing, and loss of bladder or bowel control are common signs it’s time to see a spine specialist. If you’re experiencing any of these symptoms, scheduling a spine evaluation with an orthopedic spine surgeon in San Antonio can help identify the underlying cause and the right treatment path.

Common diagnostic tests for spine conditions include X-rays, MRI scans, CT scans, and electromyography (EMG). These tests help pinpoint the exact cause of your back or neck pain, identify any abnormalities or injuries, and determine the most effective treatment plan for your condition.

Yes, many spine conditions can be treated without surgery. Non-surgical treatment options include physical therapy, medication management, and epidural steroid injections, often combined with lifestyle modifications to relieve pain and improve mobility. Dr. Edionwe evaluates each patient to determine whether conservative care or surgical intervention is the right path forward.

Spine surgery aims to relieve pain, improve mobility, and enhance your overall quality of life. Most patients experience some temporary restrictions or discomfort during spine surgery recovery, but the majority see significant improvement in their symptoms and daily function over time. Recovery timelines vary depending on the procedure, so Dr. Edionwe will walk you through what to expect for your specific surgery before your appointment.

The risks and complications of spine surgery vary depending on the procedure performed, but may include infection, bleeding, nerve damage, blood clots, or adverse reactions to anesthesia. Dr. Edionwe will review these risks in detail with you before your procedure, so you fully understand what to expect and can make an informed decision about your spine surgery.

Physical therapy after spine surgery is often recommended to help you regain strength, mobility, and function during recovery. Dr. Edionwe will determine the right rehabilitation program for you based on your individual needs, procedure type, and recovery progress, so you have a clear plan for getting back to your daily activities.

Spine surgery recovery times vary depending on the type of procedure and individual factors such as age and overall health. Dr. Edionwe will provide specific post-operative instructions covering activities, medications, and lifestyle modifications to help you heal as quickly and safely as possible after surgery.

Spine surgery success rates vary depending on your specific condition, the type of procedure, and individual factors such as overall health and how closely post-operative instructions are followed. Dr. Edionwe will discuss expected outcomes with you based on your diagnosis and treatment plan, so you know what results to realistically expect before moving forward with surgery.

Dr. Edionwe may recommend certain lifestyle changes after spine surgery, such as maintaining a healthy weight, avoiding smoking, practicing good posture, and incorporating regular low-impact exercise. These habits help support long-term spinal health and reduce the risk of future back or neck problems.

Follow-up appointments after spine surgery are typically scheduled at regular intervals to monitor your recovery, address any concerns, and adjust your treatment plan as needed. Dr. Edionwe will advise you on the ideal follow-up schedule based on your procedure and individual recovery progress, so you feel supported every step of the way after your surgery.
